internet and retail casino gambling figures for West Virginia in December

The latest revenue report is in, and both retail and online casino gambling in West Virginia for December are down month-to-month.

The Mountain State’s retail casino revenue came out to $7,044,436.80 in December. Online casino gaming in West Virginia resulted in $10,281,924.40.

Here’s a deep dive into December’s numbers.

December’s online gambling numbers are down from November

Revenue for online casinos in West Virginia dropped slightly month-to-month. In November, online gaming revenue came out to $10,332,772.70 — $50,848.30 more than December’s total.

Additionally, West Virginia’s online casino gaming handle fell by about $10.5 million. In December, West Virginians gambled $300,648,752.06. The month prior, players bet $311,166,800.49.

West Virginia online casinos paid out $290,366,827.66 to winners during the month of December, too. That number is down by roughly $10.47 million compared to November’s figures.

Online casino gambling in West Virginia shows year-to-year growth

Despite a month-to-month drop in both handle and revenue, West Virginia’s internet gambling industry showed positive growth from December 2022 compared to December 2021.

In 2021, West Virginians gambled $223,879,339.08 on online casino gaming. December 2022’s handle shows a jump of roughly $76.77 million — a massive leap.

Year-to-year revenue was up as well — another great sign for the state’s industry. The latest report shows that December 2022’s revenue is nearly $3 million more than December 2021’s total of $6,991,202.64.

Plenty of buzz surrounds West Virginia online gambling industry

With year-to-year numbers in the industry up in West Virginia, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the state’s online casino sector continues to grow and provide more options for bettors.

In late December, Play’n Go secured an online casino license in the Mountain State. One of the world’s largest online slots suppliers, Play’n Go offers games like Book of Dead and Reactoonz, among others.

“West Virginia’s regulated iGaming marketplace is thriving, and it’s brilliant to be able to finish the year strongly by acquiring a license,” Play’n Go CCO Magnus Olsson said.

Then, in November, Hacksaw Gaming — an online slot gaming company similar to Play’n Go — announced it would make its West Virginia debut. Even before that, Internet Vikings and EveryMatrix agreed on a West Virginia online gaming partnership.

Retail casino numbers drop year-to-year and month-to-month

While West Virginia’s online casino gambling industry enjoyed positive growth from December 2021 to December 2022, the year-to-year totals don’t give the same results for the state’s retail casino sector.

In December 2021, West Virginia’s retail casinos tallied $8,239,114.84 in revenue. Comparing that figure to December 2022, it equates to a $1.2 million drop year-to-year.

December’s casino revenue totals in West Virginia were $635,766.01 less than November’s total. In November, brick-and-mortar casino revenue in the Mountain State came out to $7,680,202.81.

Looking across the board at the specific casino games, numbers were down month-to-month as well.

Blackjack was the most popular game in December, commanding $2,411,901 in revenue. That was a slight drop — $12,703, to be exact — from November’s revenue total.

Roulette, craps, poker, and three-card poker were the other popular games in December. Revenue for all four games, though, fell month-to-month as well.

West Virginia roulette revenue for December came out to $700,075. December’s revenue stands at $135,853.75 less than November’s mark of $835,928.75.

Craps had the second-largest month-to-month decline of casino games. Craps’ revenue for December was $645,807, down $79,301 from November’s revenue of $725,108.

Three-card poker was down by $72,928 in December. That month, the game’s revenue totaled $305,538. In November, three-card poker revenue stood at $378,476.

Poker’s December revenue of $335,168 came up short compared to November’s revenue of $366,672.
