WV gambling industry numbers for November 2022

West Virginia online gambling numbers are in for November, and just like last month, they show positive signs within the industry.

The state’s sports betting handle is up month to month, as is the West Virginia online casino industry overall. Here’s a look at the latest report from the West Virginia Lottery.

West Virginia sports betting handle rises month to month

In November, West Virginians gambled a little less than $70 million on sports — $69,848,039.65, to be exact.

That number represents a nearly $19 million jump from October’s sports betting handle of $51,118,726. In other words, West Virginia sports bettors gambled 36.5% more in November than the previous month.

Football is king when it comes to sports betting in West Virginia, so it’s no surprise that the state enjoyed a bump in sports betting handle as the NFL and college football seasons continued their upward swing in November.

Year-to-year WV sports betting handle declines by a lot

Year to year, though, November’s sports betting handle is down compared to 2021. In November 2021, the state tallied just north of $83 million in sports bets.

It’s worth noting that in November 2021, the state enjoyed its highest sports betting handle in a single week, with West Virginians gambling a staggering $30.3 million in the final week of that month.

That single-week high is roughly $10.7 million more than the next highest week of November 2021, but when looking at the other weeks, it’s clear that the state’s 2022 mark was not on track to surpass its 2021 figures.

Overall, November 2022’s sports betting handle dropped by essentially 16% from November 2021. There are plenty of reasons for the dip, from fewer promos than when sportsbooks originally launched to a cooling-off period from bettors.

Over time, the market will naturally balance itself out.

Sports betting revenue dips slightly

West Virginia sports betting generated $5,017,553.59 in revenue in November. That total equates to a slight dip compared to October’s $5.06 million figure.

It’s also a dip year to year. In November 2021, the monthly sports betting revenue came out to a little more than $6.2 million.

West Virginians prefer online sports betting to retail

It’s a common trend across the country, and sports bettors in West Virginia love to bet through their online devices rather than visiting a retail casino. November’s numbers backed this up for yet another month.

In November, West Virginians gambled $60,806,491.44 through online sports betting apps. The state’s retail sports betting handle came out to $9,041,548.21 — a $51.7 million difference.

West Virginia saw its online sports betting handle jump by almost $19 million compared to October’s figures. With seven sportsbooks available at West Virginians’ fingertips, it’s no surprise.

Residents can place online bets at any of these sportsbooks:

  • DraftKings
  • Caesars
  • BetMGM
  • BetRivers
  • FanDuel
  • PointsBet
  • Betly

Additionally, there are five retail sportsbooks in West Virginia:

  1. Hollywood Casino
  2. Mountaineer Sportsbook
  3. FanDuel at The Greenbrier
  4. Wheeling Island
  5. Mardi Gras

WV online gambling revenue rises from October

Internet gambling in West Virginia remains popular, with bettors gambling $311,166,800.49 in November. The industry paid out $300,834,027.79 to winners that month as well.

In the end, online gambling resulted in $10,332,772.70 in revenue for the month.

November’s online gambling revenue total topped October’s $9,415,045.22 mark by almost $1 million. In October, the industry paid out $307,642,816.09 to winners.

Bettors gambled $317,057,861,31 in October, meaning November’s handle dropped by roughly 1.86%, or about $5.8 million.

Blackjack continues to lead in West Virginia

West Virginians love their blackjack. In November, blackjack resulted in $2,424,604 in revenue, which accounts for roughly 32% of the industry’s total for the month.

All in all, West Virginia’s casino industry totaled $7,680,202.81 in revenue for November. November’s revenue marks roughly a $600,000 jump compared to October.

Aside from blackjack, roulette ($835,928.75), craps ($725,108), and mini bac ($666,550.25) were among the most popular games. That was a similar trend to last month.

In October, blackjack ($2.5 million), roulette ($928,128 million), craps ($711,629), and mini bac revenue ($582,118.50) led the way.
