West Virginia Online Casinos Set Record In February

Casino gambling continues to grow at retail and online casinos in the Mountain State.

At retail casinos, video lottery and table games saw around 5% boosts from January. Online casinos enjoyed double-digit improvement month-over-month and recorded their best four-week period in state history.

WV online casino growth is unparalleled

There are seven West Virginia online casinos available to bettors. Hacksaw Gaming is expected to launch soon and would be the eighth.

February’s online casino handle and revenue set iGaming records in West Virginia. The state’s three operators combined to take in $367.6 million in wagers (+14.7% MoM) and paid out $355.2 million, resulting in approximately $12.4 million (+13.8% MoM) in revenue.

As a result, West Virginia online casinos have now gone five straight months with handle surpassing $300 million and revenue above $10 million. And while double-digit monthly growth is impressive, the yearly increase is even better. In February 2022, handle was $222 million, with around $8 million in revenue. Twelve months later, these numbers are up 65.6% and 55%, respectively.

Charles Town nearly matches Greenbrier’s handle

Greenbrier maintained the top spot for handle and revenue among WV online casinos in February. Its apps, BetMGM Sportsbook WV and FanDuel Casino WV, took in about $164.4 million in wagers (+9.3% MoM) and recorded around $6.4 million in revenue (+12.1% MoM).

Charles Town came close to Greenbrier with a $162.7 million handle, good for a 22.8% MoM increase from its apps of DraftKings Casino WV and PointsBet Casino WV. Its revenue fell shy of Greenbrier’s, reaching approximately $4.5 million, with a respectable 13.8% MoM gain.

Mountaineer Casino’s combined $40.4 million handle was comparatively lower, represented by BetRivers WV and Caesars Casino WV. Still, it grew by 7.2% MoM, with revenues reaching approximately $1.5 million (+19.9% MoM), the best in the state by percentage.

Video lottery still leads the way

Video lottery machines made approximately $36.9 million (+5.2% MoM) in February, up 5.2% MoM. The state’s five retail casinos took in $479.3 million in wagers (+8.3% MoM) and paid more than $442 million.

Hollywood Charles Town’s $261.3 million handle (+5.7% MoM) was around 55% of all video lottery action in the state. Its approximate revenue of $18.6 million dropped by $2 million (-9.7%) from January, though.

Wheeling was second, just ahead of Mountaineer in both handle and revenue. Both casinos outpaced the market, with Wheeling’s $85.2 million handle and $7 million in revenue representing month-over-month gains of 10.4% and 9.4%, respectively.

Mountaineer generated $74.1 million in video lottery handle, up 10.3% MoM. Its revenue was about $6.6 million, up 11.9% MoM.

Not to be outdone, Mardi Gras also returned double-digit gains in handle ($52.8 million; +12.8% MoM) and revenue ($4.3 million; +13.2% MoM).

Greenbrier, the state’s top iGaming operator, finished well below the other four retail casinos in video lottery numbers. Nonetheless, its $5.9 million handle (+40.5% MoM)  and $356.8K (+64% MoM) revenue bounced back from a poor January showing.

Another strong month for table games

Table games revenue topped $8 million for the second straight month, totaling around $8.5 million (+4.8% MoM) for the weeks ending in February.

Hollywood Charles Town accounted for over 60% of all table games winnings, just shy of $5.5 million. Greenbrier had the best month-over-month growth, up 44% from January.

Blackjack was the main contributor to table games revenue, reaching $3 million across all five casinos. The top five games were:

• Mini baccarat: $598K (+31.2% MoM)
