Mountaineer's quest to make bowl in 2023 begins at Penn State

West Virginia University and the Big 12 Conference recently rolled out the 2023 football schedule. The West Virginia Mountaineers finished the Big 12 with a 5-7 overall record in 2022, going 3-3 at home and 2-4 on the road.

Their opening game is on Sept. 2 against the Penn State Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium. The Mountaineers are already big underdogs.

Penn State already favored by multiple scores

West Virginia sports betting will be four years old when the Mountaineers take the field against the Nittany Lions. Residents and visitors to West Virginia can bet both online and in person at casinos in the Mountain State.

Even though the Mountaineers have not faced off against the Nittany Lions since 1992, they will be hard-pressed to leave Pennsylvania with a victory. The Nittany Lions are already favored by 18.5 points in what will be the 60th matchup between the two teams.

The last time the two teams faced off, in October of 1991, the Mountaineers suffered a 51-6 loss at Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions hold a 48-9-2 all-time record against the Mountaineers.

West Virginia last beat Penn State in the 1950s.

Championship continues to escape Mountaineers

Since coming together as a team in 1891, the West Virginia Mountaineers have yet to win a championship. Their overall record, however, is a winning one. They are 768-513-45 over the 130 years.

During that time, the team has won 15 conference titles. The first conference title was won in 1953. The team captured the conference title five times in eight seasons under coach Art Lewis. The last conference title won was in 2011 under Dana Holgorsen, which is also the last time the team was in a bowl game.

Neal Brown has been the head coach for four seasons, with a record of 22-25.
